How to use (Unlock?) Samsung SCH-U740 if I currently have cell service with Alltel?

My wife wants a qwerty keyboard on her phone and a friend gave us a Samsung SCH-U740 from Verizon. Our cell service is currently with Alltel and have older phones. I didn't see a place for a sim card in the SCH-U740 so even if I unlock the phone, is there any way to switch over the phone to use with Alltel? (btw, Verizon (NYSE: VZ) bought Alltel, but don't know when that kicks in or if it will affect this situation)
