Delve touch phone (Alltel/Verison) switch to prepaid with internet plan?

i have a prepaid Alltel phone but my friend is selling her Delve touch screen to me and there is one way i can afford a contract so would i be able to switch that phone to a prepaid and then later on back to a contract when i am able to afford it? i was thinking about going to the verison store and see if i can get an internet package on my prepaid plan and keep money on it every month.. would that work? PLEASE HELP! thanks!
