Alert Notification for Text Message is not working on the G1 Google Phone.?

I just got the g1 Google (NSDQ: GOOG) phone today. And I was wondering, why when I get a text message, that I dont get like a ringtone noise or some sort of sound notifying me I got the text message? Do I have a bad device or something? Help me out
