Is the iPhone 3GS compatible with Altec Lansing inMotion im600?

I know that the Altec Lansing im600 is not compatible with the iPhone. However, the system does have an aux input for MP3 players. I was wondering if it would work with the iPhone through the aux. If I went to buy an aux cable, then could I hook up the iPhone to it and have it work? Would it be safe?
