Canceling iPhone 3G data plan?

OK well I have purchased an iPhone 3g this past September, and I am on a family plan, but recently my parents have had some financial trouble and they want to remove any unnecessary charges on my phone. So they are going to cancel my data plan at the end of month, and I do not have another phone to use. Is it possible to still use my iphone without the data plan? I do plan on deleting all my apps and only using internet in a Wi-Fi connection. Thanks.
forgot to add: i am deleting apps because i heard from a mac genius that the iphone 3g is constantly recieving data updates to applications and e-mail, etc. without me knowing it, and if i am not using wi-fi i can get charged...? i don't know if it's b.s., but i just don't want to risk ringing up a 10k phone bill.

Yes you can still use ur phone for everything else that you pay for.
Ie. Calls, text, pics and what not.

you should also have your service provider block Data. They may say it can't be done. But it can. I can't imagine using my iPhone 3G without data. Is there anyway you could earn money to pay for your own Data? That's what I'd try to do.
