If I buy an Unlocked 3G Iphone can I use my sim card from my old regular...

...iPhone with no problems? I currently have an old iPhone and want to upgrade to the new iPhone but AT&T tells me I need a new sim card and I need to sign a new contract and get a new plan all together. If I get an unlocked 3G iPhone (The new one) can I just pop my old sim card in there and have everything I had before plus the benefits of apps and all that? I just want to know if i'll still have data, voicemail and txt's.
