how long can I keep my number?

I need to be in the US and canada for some months , and want to have a prepaid SIM for the region in my phone so that my family can contact me in a hurry

no problem so far , except I won't normally be using this for calls out ....so who will give me the longest validity without putting in more money , or at least for a very small top up ? best I have seen so far is $100 top up for a year , which is a lot to throw away on calls I won't use ; can get calls to the phone at a good price , so that isn't a consideration

any suggestions anyone?

The best out there for top up could be a local company, here there is a company that is regional and with only $25.00 you can have your number for 3 months before having to top it off again, check with the convinience stores in your area for more information about local or regional companies offering prepaid service.
