Internet & Emails - Do i need a data plan

I have just bought an O2 (NYSE: TEF) Ignito (HTC Diamond), do i need to purchase a data plan to surf the internet/check e-mails, or will it simply let me surf using my curreny Pay as you go mobile sim card,
