How exactly do these charity programs work?

From what I gather, most of these companies process the phones that the charity collects and then gives them a predetermined fee or a flat rate, it really depends on the buyback program.

They take the phone gathered by the charity and then they give the charity money as a sort of finder's fee. Phones 4 Charity is a good example and a part of the P4C Global network. And it is a legitimate company and has made several major contributions to many charities nationwide.

Couldn't the school simply sell the phones themselves rather than go through a middleman?

I believe the OP wants to use a middleman for now to expedite the whole process until they get it down and then do it themselves. Plus, I think they lack the proper resources at the moment.

Yeah, plus for a school to actually sell something they would have to go through tons of paperwork.
