How to unlock kyocera x-tc phone?

I bought this phone off ebay, and the listing said it was brand new. It also warned that the buyer would have to know how to unlock the phone, but after a little research we decided that just meant if you wanted to use it with another carrier. Well, we received the phone, and it was NOT brand new, actually quite obviously opened. We tried to contact the seller with no reply, and found out they don't accept returns. So, we went to activate the phone, but something came up saying that we needed to go to a Virgin Mobile (NYSE: VM) store and have them unlock the phone so we could activate it. It said you need the receipt, but of course since the phone is not brand new the ebay seller did not send us a receipt. So , we now have no idea how to unlock this phone to activate it!
