Get an O2 (NYSE: TEF) pay as you go genie card, 300 free texts a month if you top up with a tenner, the more credit you put on the more free texts or talk time you get !.
Ive found it better than being tied to a contract.

Default what is the best mobile contract from o2?
my contract runs out this month,i was on £25 a month for 100 texts and 100 mins which i now believe to be totally crap.Any ideas my friends? UK only please

I'm on the £35 a month contract. I get 700 texts and 700mins talkime. It runs out this month but I intend to renew it as I think it is about the best deal around. Plus you get free evening and weekend calls which don't come off your allowance.
