Default Purchasing a Blackberry w/o internet service plan?

I want a BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM) for the look. I don't care much about the extra bells and whistles.

I heard that without purchasing internet service plans you won't be able to access simple tools like calendar, calculator, etc. Is this true?
