So you are thinking about using a smartphone on Verizon, but you are really confused about data plans, and if they are right for you.

If you plan on using a BlackBerry device, you are required by Verizon to have a BlackBerry data plan. There is no way around this, as they will not activate any BlackBerry onto their network without one.

Don't want a BlackBerry? Thinking about a different smartphone? Some of them can be activated without a data plan, like the Motorola Q, Palm Centro, etc.

If the phones release date is newer than November 14th, 2008, you will need a data plan, like the Samsung Omnia.

This thread will be left open for discussion about the data plans. Feel free to ask questions.

Taken from IntoMobile!! Information will be updated as it is released.

Just as we expected, Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Wireless has announced that it has completed its acquisition of Alltel Corporation from Atlantis Holdings LLC, creating the largest wireless carrier in the United States as a result. Verizon paid approximately $5.9 billion for the equity of Alltel, and assumed Alltel’s debt of approximately $22.2 billion.
The acquisition expands Verizon Wireless’ network coverage to approximately 290 million people, nearly the entire United States population, and increases the company’s customers by 12.9 million, after conforming adjustments and before required divestitures, making it the largest wireless carrier in the country with more than 83.7 million total customers, based on third quarter 2008 reported results from both companies. Approximately 2.1 million of those total customers are in markets that will be divested by Verizon Wireless in the coming months, as required by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) as a condition of the merger approval.

In markets that will be retained and combined with Verizon Wireless’ operations, the company will continue to use the Alltel brand for the next several months, and will maintain Alltel’s existing GSM networks in retained Alltel markets to continue serving the roaming needs of GSM carriers’ customers. Alltel customers in markets to be retained will receive a letter during the next few weeks informing them about the acquisition and new services (i.e. mobile broadband) that will be available to them when they transition to Verizon Wireless.
No action is needed by Alltel’s existing customers at this time. Customers’ current service plans, prices and features will remain the same throughout the transition. Verizon Wireless will notify customers, by mail, about any changes that may impact their service in the future.
Verizon Wireless will re-brand Alltel operations in the retained markets in phases, beginning in Q2 2009 and continuing through Q3 2009, as billing conversions are completed throughout the country. During the transition period, Alltel-branded stores will remain open to serve customers… Full release is available from here.

Bluetooth!!! Most phones now have it, and it is a great technology, but how do you use it? How do you pair a headset to a phone, and how can you use Bluetooth to the fullest potential? Have no fear, your answers are here.

Here is a simple guide to get your phone and your headset connected.

What you need:

Bluetooth capable phone
Bluetooth headset (fully charged)
A few minutes

Make sure that your phones Bluetooth is on, and is in discoverable mode. (Not sure how to do that? Read the owners manual that came with your phone.) Make sure that your headset is turned off. Press and hold the power button on the headset for several seconds, until it starts flashing. It is now in pair mode. Some phones will automatically find the headset, some will not. If yours doesn't, simply search for new devices. It will find your headset. It will ask you for a code. The default code is usually 0000. Enter that into the phone. It will finish pairing, and then you can connect. You are all done. Enjoy being handsfree!!!

FAQ

Q. What is Bluetooth?

A. Bluetooth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Q. I want to listen to music using my headset and my phone, how?

A. You need two things. A phone with the A2DP Bluetooth profile enabled, and Bluetooth headphones, not a headset. Most, if not all headsets, will not play music through Bluetooth.

Q. I got my phone and my headset paired. When the phone rings, I don't hear my ringtone, just a regular annoying ring.

A. Your phone does not have the A2DP profile, and that is why you are hearing a generic ringtone, and not your own.

Q. I have a Motorola headset, and a Samsung phone, will they work together?

A. Yes. Bluetooth is not brand dependent. You don't need to have a Motorola phone to use a Motorola headset. Almost all brands are compatible when it comes to phones and headsets. You may run into issues getting connected to a car, as not all brands of phones seem to work in all cars equipped with Bluetooth.

Q. What else can I pair up with using Bluetooth?

A. Well, you can pair with other Bluetooth equipped phones, cars, computers, printers, pretty much anything that has Bluetooth. Can you transfer files back and forth? Depends on your carrier, and how much they have locked down with Bluetooth. Some providers do not cripple it at all, and some cripple it heavily.

Q. Some states have made it illegal to talk on a cellphone while driving, what about using a Bluetooth or wired headset?

A. It should be 100% legal to use a headset of some sort. Remember to always be careful and make driving your #1 priority, not talking on the phone if you are behind the wheel.

Welcome to the Classified section. Here are some guidelines and suggestions to help you make your purchase or sale go smoothly. Please remember that this section is only for the purchase or sale of privately owned merchandise. Retail sales are not allowed, and will be removed by the moderators and/or administrators.

Sellers:

When selling your phone, try to list as much information as possible. Phone model, provider if it is locked to one, condition, accessories, box, usage, price, location, shipping preference, payment method accepted. Include pictures if possible.

Example of a bad listing:

Blackberry for sale. email iloveblackberry@blackberry.com

Example of a good listing:

Blackberry Pearl for sale. Blackberry Pearl in near mint condition. Used for about 3 months. Locked to T-Mobile. Includes all accessories including box. Asking $280.00 + shipping. Will ship internationally for extra, ask me about it. I am located in Los Angeles, CA. Contact me at iloveblackberry@blackberry.com and I only accept Paypal. Here are some pics:

Buyers:

So you want to buy a new phone? Make sure you are buying the right phone for your service. If you have a GSM provider, make sure that the phone is either unlocked, or locked to your current provider. Make sure that it has the proper bands, like 850 if you are on AT&T. GSM dual band phones that only have the 900/1800 bands WILL NOT work in North America. Be sure to double check the compatibility of the phone on sites like GSMArena.com - GSM reviews, opinions, votes, manuals, ringtones and more... which provides the proper information regarding what bands each GSM phone has.

If you have a CDMA provider (Sprint, Verizon, Altell, MetroPCS, etc) make sure that the phone will work with your provider. Sprint will only activate Sprint branded phones onto their network as of now. Some of the other providers may be able to flash the phone so that it works with their network. Not sure? Double check with your provider before buying, to save yourself some money and heartache. Be sure to ask any seller for the ESN number beforehand so that you can confirm its status with your provider before purchasing. You do not want to end up with a blacklisted ESN phone. It will be a paperweight for you, and that is about it.

If you have questions, or are not sure about something, do some research. Google can be your best friend when looking for information. This forum can also be a big help. Use the search function to find helpful posts. Be sure to use good judgment. Remember, anything that sounds too good to be true, usually is too good to be true. Very few things in life are free, or are massively discounted.

If you see something listed here that is inappropriate or is a retail wholesaler trying to list multiple phones or electronics, please report the post. The moderators and administrators will be notified, and we will remove it.

There are a few different versions of the LG Shine. This is just some information to help anyone who might be confused about the different models.

LG CU720 Shine - Full phone specifications - Carried by AT&T, this is a quad band phone.

These are all GSM phones, meaning that they will not work in the US with Verizon, Sprint, Alltel, US Cellular, MetroPCS, Cricket, Nextel, Boost or any other CDMA provider. They will work with T-Mobile, AT&T, Centennial or any other GSM network. If you are on AT&T, you will want the CU720, as it has the 850 band. The others will work, but your reception and/or call clarity may be affected. AT&T uses the 850 band in some areas, so if you use a phone without that band, you may have no reception at all.

I will leave this thread open if anyone has anything to add to it. If anyone knows that a specific LG Shine phone is offered by a carrier, please post it, and I will add it to the list.

This is a little guide to help you get the max out of your post.

Title - Be as specific as you can in your title. Don't just put help as the title. If it is a hardware problem, put that in the title, etc.

Information - Give as much information as you can if you are having a problem, like the phone model, headset model, wireless provider, program, etc. sometimes your location helps also. The more information we have, the better of an answer you can get.

Giving help - If you know the answer, please post. If you don't, and have nothing helpful or constructive to post, please don't answer the question. If someone asks about getting a new Verizon phone, don't suggest the iPhone, even when the poster says that they don't want the iPhone.

We would like IntoMobile to become a great wireless forum, with a great community and wealth of knowledge from our members. If you get some help, feel free to give the person who helped you a little reputation. Points are always nice, and appreciated.
If anyone has questions about this, feel free to PM me or any of the moderators, and we will help you as much as we can.

I am hoping that the keys do not crack, which I have read about. I am texting very carefully to prevent this.

Any other owners? Feel free to chime in, even if you have a W580i.

Welcome to the IntoMobile forums, your online resource for everything cellular.

Please take the time to read through the rules to ensure that your IntoMobile experience is the best.

Posting rules:

Unlocking posts - You may discuss unlocking as it is legal. Please do not post your IMEI number in hopes of getting a free unlock. Please do not report any thread to a moderator or administrator in hopes of us unlocking your phone, because we don't know how, and we cannot do it for you. There are plenty of online unlocking services, including your service provider. Anyone in violation of this is subject to anything from a warning to a permanent ban.

Flaming/Trolling - Any content that is unlawful, harmful, harassing, threatening, defamatory, vulgar, hateful or distasteful is strictly prohibited. Please treat others as you would want to be treated.

Swearing - There is a time and a place for it, and this is not it. People of all ages visit this forum, so please keep all discussions to a PG-13 rating.

Advertising/Spamming - This is not allowed. If you would like to become a paying advertiser here, please feel free to contact the administrator about setting up an account. If you violate this, your account is in jeopardy of a permanent ban.

Privacy of members - There is no reason to reveal personal information such as full names, phone numbers, mailing address or other information that is invasive of other's privacy without their consent. Please keep what is private, private.

Pyramid schemes/get rich quick/click for a free_____ - Posts like this are not allowed. This is a cellphone forum and that kind of information has no place here.

Software piracy - Any content containing registration key/serial numbers, cracks, illegal programs, torrent sites, warez or direct links relating to pirated software that violate copyright laws will automatically be removed and the poster will be warned and possibly banned. Requests and offers for copyrighted material will be deleted.

Adult/Explicit/Objectionable content - This forum is intended for a wide age group, any content including pictures or links links to pornographic content will be deleted and the poster will be banned.

Cross/Double posting - Please post to the MOST relevant forum. Double or cross forum posting or other attempts at flooding the forum with posts will be removed and the poster will be warned. If you post once, you can reply by hitting the reply button in your post if you have more information to add. If you start another post that is a duplicate of another post, it will be deleted, and you will be warned.

Bumping - This refers to posting with the intention to either pad your post count (post whoring) or to keep a thread 'hot' so it appears at the top of the forum. These type of posts can be described as useless information, gibberish, redundant or one-liners and will be closed immediately.

Multiple identities/accounts - Only one username or account is allowed per forum member. If you have forgotten your log in information, do not create a new account, please contact us.

Languages - All content made available to the public, including titles, signatures or attachments MUST be in the English language. There are no exceptions to this.

Selling rules:

Intomobile does allow selling in the Classified section located at the bottom of the main page. Please include full details along with a price of the item you wish to sell. The Classified section is for private sales only. If you have a business and wish to sell here, please contact the administrator. The staff of IntoMobile cannot be held accountable for any transaction that takes place in the Classified section. Buying and selling is the risk of each respective person. If you buy or sell, do it wisely. Do your research, and always keep any emails or PM's dealing with a transaction for your protection.

If you see any violation of the above rules, please click on the report button located on the lower right hand side of the message box.

The bottom line:

If you choose to ignore the rules, the administrators and moderators of IntoMobile.com reserve the right to move, remove, close, or edit any post, and ban any member. Once you are banned, you will lose all posting privileges on the forum.

What if I don't understand a rule or not sure if I can post something?
If you are not sure, ask. Ignorance is no excuse to break the rules. Please contact us first either via PM or email if you are unsure if the information you wish to post may conflict with our rules or policies.

The staff of IntoMobile reserves the right to make any necessary changes to the rules at any time without notification.
