I have ATT in the US. Can I use the iPhone 3GS on Softbank's network in...

...Okinawa, Japan? I am going to be stationed at Kadena AFB in March. I have the iPhone 3GS with ATT in the US. Can I use that phone on Softbank's network with one of their plans? Would I have to cancel my contract with ATT? I really want to be able to use the iPhone. Thanks!
