how to unlock a softbank phone and use in america?

I really want to get a japanese phone but when i was in japan they wouldnt sell me the phone.. or something if i didnt live in japan... so i was wondering if i buy an unlocked phone from ebay or something will i be able to just put my attt sim card inside one of the soft bank phones and be able to use it or is there more complicated steps? explain please!!

I rented a phone from them previously, but I think that they sell them as well.
