Default Will an unlocked iPhone work with a Softbank (Japan) sim card?

I am thinking of buying an unlocked iPhone, as I will be spending much of the next few months both in Ireland and Japan. Were I to buy an Irish iPhone and unlock it, would it accept a Softbank (OTCPK: SFTBF) sim card and connect to their network in Japan?

Thanks in advance,
Brendan
