T-Mobile required data plan?

So I'm thinking of getting the Samsung Behold, however I've been hearing mixed rumors of whether or not it's required to buy the data plan, or it's not required. I personally know I'm not going to use the data plan, and I'm not willing to pay an extra 30 dollars for it.
So will T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) let me purchase the phone WITHOUT the data plan?

We have the samsung behold and don't have a data plan we did not have to get it works fine .
