You can port your number over. However, typically ports take a bit longer because Tmobile will have to get permission from Cingular.

If you want to keep the same number, just port from one provider to the other. If you are out of contract, you will be fine. If you are under contract, porting will automatically terminate your contract and you will be responsible for an early termination fee.

You can take your BB Pearl from one to the other, as long as the phone was unlocked by the original provider, or you purchased it already unlocked. If you have not gotten it unlocked yet, contact your current provider before you switch, and tell them that you need to have it unlocked so that you can use it out of the country with a prepaid SIM. Do not mention that you are going to switch to another provider.
