I like cingular because they have the family talk plan and I can talk 24/7 with all of my family for free.
My problems with it are: Dropped calls in certain areas or rainstorms, sometimes the service when I call is inconsistent, and the web pages aren't always working properly.
All in all, it's a pretty good service and I've saved a lot of money using them.

Cingular has fewer dropped calls, better coverage and cooler phones than any other provider hands down.

Cingular is wholly owned by the company that now calls itself AT&T (it's really SBC, one of the seven original Regional Bell Operating Companies -- or RBOCs). It was originally a joint venture between BellSouth, Ameritech, SBC, and Pacific Telesis. All of these companies except BellSouth are now part of the new AT&T. SBC bought out the other companies' interests in Cingular, and now they've proposed to purchase BellSouth as well.

AT&T is poised to become (once again) a powerhouse in the telecom world, but not a monopoly.

Cingular seems to have pretty good service. I selected Sprint (NYSE: S) because at one time it had a bigger footprint. I think that wireless service is going to become ubiquitous over the next few years, and commoditized. Everyone will have service everywhere, and if they don't, they'll be bought out by someone who does.

I do like Cingular's EV-DO service for laptop computers...it seems to work in more places than Verizon's or Sprint's...at the moment. I'm sure that will change too.
