prepaid verizon cell phones used on a regular plan?

can you buy a prepaid Verizon (NYSE: VZ) cell phone, and take it to the verizon wireless store and ask them to put your number, that is on your plan, on it? in other words can i buy a cheap phone from target or wherever cause mine broke, and ask them to switch numbers for me?
