Default Can you use a cell phone with a SIM card on a Verizon Wireless phone plan?

My friend just got me a cell phone that uses a SIM card for christmas, but I have Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Wireless. Is there any way to make the phone compatible with my service? What do I have to do to make it compatible?
