...contract Sim? i baught this w880i phone of freind i put my Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) contract sim in it it worked but i put my husbands vodafone pay as you go sim in and it asked for unlock code why is this if both same network ?

First of all is it originally a Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) handset? Or was is it from another network that has been unlocked? I have just tried to replicate your problem with the same model handset, put a PAYG simcard into a contract Sony Ericsson (NYSE: SNE) w880i handset, which worked fine. I can only think the PAYG simcard is fault or maybe the copper contacts need a bit of a clean. The only network that dont allow PAYG simcards into contract handsets & vice-versa is 3uk.

you need to get it unlocked. It's not the network it's the difference between contract and payg. lots of places can do it for you.
