Changing numbers from vodafone to o2?

I need to swap numbers from Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) to o2, so how do i do this? oh, im going to have a new sim, that i got sent in the post in my phone, so will i be able to text using this, and then my number will change? how long does it normally take? thanks
