What does operator selection mean on nokia 6300 unlocked to vodafone ?

I have a Nokia (NYSE: NOK) 6300 unlocked to Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) and wen i goto the settings and then onto phone settings then onto operator selection and if u click manual it comes up with 4 uk networks 1)Vodafone UK (My network). 2)02 UK. 3)orange UK. 4)T-mobile UK, wat do they do plz can u give an answer??
